Today is the ‘run van Winschoten’. The Run the oldest ultrarun in the Netherlands. It is a 100 km road race. Since 1976, the competition has been held in principle on the second Saturday in September. Since 1995, the solo run has also been dominated by the official Dutch 100 km Championship. Also there is a 50km, a 10×10 relay race and various walking distances, and distances for children.
The run in Winschoten (35km from Groningen) is a phenomenon in the city. One lap is 10km in and around the city. Locals put their chairs and speakers outside, and stay there the whole day supporting the participants. Also many streets are decorated, because there is a price for the best decorated street.
The run has a strong field of participants, with several international runners who can run under 7 hours. Pascal van Norden is a contender for the Netherlands, he finished fourth place in 2019. In the women’s race, the battle for the Netherlands will most likely be between Hinke Schokker, Arenda Könnecke and Sameena van der Mijden.
Unfortunately for Groningen Nico Swart (winner 100 miles Sint Annen) or Lut v.d. Molen (Pelgrimspad finisher, 455km in 7 days) do not participate this year.
For the first time it is possible to live track the runners.
